New Mexico community solar programs are required by state legislation to use Non-Universal Consolidated Billing, which is a two-bill model where you see your full credits applied directly to your existing utility bill, but then get a separate bill from Perch for the cost of those credits (their monetary value based on your solar share farm share’s energy production)—but at a discounted rate. You’re paying for your share’s generated utility credit, but at a lesser price point thanks to the community solar discount Perch provides.
You’ll see the full $100 deduction directly on your utility bill.
It’s like paying $90 to receive $100
Expand that over a year and your savings add up!
New Mexico's community solar program is still in its pilot stage. The Community Solar Act, which officially established the program, became law in April 2021. It limits the total amount of community solar in the state to 200 megawatts for the first three years. However, there are exceptions for community solar projects on Native American tribal lands and for rural electric distribution cooperatives. Under the act, community solar subscribers can buy shares to offset up to 100% of their average annual electric usage. Also, 30% of the capacity from any community solar facility is reserved for low-income households and organizations that support them. Examples include food pantries and homeless shelters.
